Gemini -PointRed wins Mobile WiMAX deal worth Rs 435 rore

Gemini Communication has announced that the company and its product subsidiary, PointRed Telecom has won 435 crore contract from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for the deployment of IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX in India.
Earlier in August 2009, BSNL received responses for this 1000 crore Mobile WiMAX tender from Gemini -PointRed, Huawei Telecommunications, ZTE, Samsung, Alvarion, Motorola & Harris Stratex.

Total of 7000 Mobile WiMAX Base station is to be deployed across BSNL network in India. As per the tender conditions upon technical qualification by BSNL, four lowest bidders will be selected to rollout the world largest Mobile WiMAX network. Gemini-PointRed combo emerged as the lowest bidder (L1), ZTE (L2), Harris Stratex (L3) and Alvarion (L4). Lowest bidder Gemini- PointRed gets 40% of the contract and remaining is to be shared between ZTE, Harris Stratex & Alvarion respectively.

This WiMAX contract is spread across several states of India for enabling various types of QUAD play applications. BSNL`s Mobile WiMAX network once deployed will be the largest network in the world. This network will be connecting various CSC`s across India for delivering E-governance service to millions of citizens and for commercial broadband services.

Now with WiMAX spectrum auction due in January for private operators, Mobile WiMAX equipment manufacturers including home grown PointRed Telecom are gearing up for their share in the 40000 crore Indian Mobile WiMAX market.

BSNL already awarded first phase of the 270 crore mobile WiMAX project to Huawei Telecommunication and Gemini-PointRed combination in January 2009.
